The rule

Thirty seconds to learn

Triple Triad is played by two, on a grid three squares by three. Each player brings five cards, and every card carries four numbers — one per side.

The top number is measured against the card laid above it, the left one against the card to its left, and so on. 1 to 9, then A, which counts as ten.
  1. Place

Turn by turn, each player lays a card on a free square. Nine squares, nine cards: a match is exactly nine moves long.

  2. Flip

Your card lands against an opponent’s card? The two numbers facing each other are compared. If yours is higher, their card turns your colour — and from then on it counts for you.

  3. Count

With the grid full, you count the cards in your colour, including the one still in your hand. The majority wins.

Your 7 against their 3. You lay your card to the right of theirs: the two numbers facing each other are your 7 and their 3. Yours is higher, so their card turns your colour. The other numbers only ever concern the squares they touch.

That is the whole of the basic game. The fifteen optional rules — Same, Plus, Elemental… — are laid on top of it, one region and one opponent at a time, and it is their combinations that make the matches you remember.

The game

The whole game fits on nine squares

Nine moves, and not one more. Short enough that a card wasted on the third turn is paid for on the ninth, and long enough that you can see it coming.
  • The whole game, nothing less

The cards, the opponents, the regional rules, the progression: the game you know, entire, with no cut-down version.

  • The rules you are expecting

All fifteen, combos included. They stack the way they do in the original, and that is where the matches get interesting.

  • On the phone and on the desk

One account, the same collection everywhere. Start a match on the train, finish it at your desk.

The rules

Fifteen rules, and they stack

Every region and every opponent has its own. You find them out by playing — but there is no harm in knowing what you are walking into.

And above all of them: Combo. When Same or Plus flips cards, those cards flip their own neighbours in turn. It never switches off — it is the rule that turns a good move into an avalanche.

Ranked matches are refereed. Every match is checked again before it counts. Nobody climbs the ladder any way but playing.

The collection

Five hundred and sixty-five cards to find

You win them off opponents, you trade them, you bid for them at the auction house. Some of them keep you waiting a long while.

Forty of the 565, taken across the list.
